Lesbian Moms Introduced On Disney’s ‘Good Luck Charlie’

On a recent episode of Good Luck Charlie, the Disney Channel introduced the network’s first same-sex couple.

In the episode, Charlie has a playdate with her preschool pal named Taylor. Before Taylor arrives, Amy (Leigh-Allyn Baker) informs Bob (Eric Allan Kramer) that her parents are going to be sticking around as well. Both believe they’ve met her mother – though Amy remembers her name as Susan, while Bob believes it’s Cheryl.

When the doorbell rings and Susan and Cheryl casually introduce themselves as Taylor’s parents, Bob says, “Oh, Taylor has two moms.” Chiding her husband, Amy replies, “Nothing gets past you, Bob.” And then the foursome gathers around the living room and carries on with the playdate. It’s no big deal.

Disney first announced last June that they were planning on featuring a storyline on Good Luck Charlie where gay characters would be introduced. “This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors,” the network explained in a statement. “Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”

While the Disney Channel was largely applauded for its show of inclusiveness – and the way in which it was done – they’re facing criticism from the American Family Association’s One Million Moms.

“One Million Moms launched an email campaign in 2013 that urged Disney officials to abandon their plans to corrupt the children’s network with LGBT content,” they said in a statement. “However, Disney officials have not responded to the thousands of emails protesting their plans. Disney has decided to be politically correct instead of providing family-friendly programming. Disney should stick to entertaining, not pushing an agenda.”

With a counterargument, was GLAAD’s news director Ross Murray. “There are children with gay or lesbian parents in their school, worshipping in church, working on the job, or serving in the military, so this television show isn’t really that different than what kids encounter on a day-to-day basis,” he claimed.

Good Luck Charlie‘s series finale airs Sunday, Feb. 16 on Disney Channel at 8/7c.
